When scrapbooking July pages, the obvious place to get ideas for your journaling is from the photos you took in July. Summer is in full swing as we kick off the month celebrating America’s birthday on July 4th. Road trips and family vacations are on the calendar and the sun is out! As you look at your photos/events from July what stories are emerging?

In this post I’ll share some journaling prompts with you for July photos. You may be current or you may be working with photos from the 1960’s … it’s ok, just jump in where you’re at. I’ll be posting journal prompts every month this year so eventually we will have the whole year covered with journaling ideas. Besides photos, another place to get journaling ideas is from the current Sticker Packs and Variety Mat Packs you are using. Some of my July Journal Prompts are from my photos and some are from Creative Memories United We Stand, Staycation, and Summertime Sticker Packs.

July Journal Prompts

Here are some journaling prompts to help you tell your stories from the photos you took in July (any year). Of course we all have different events and life circumstances but if you are stuck and not sure what to write about in your journal or in your scrapbook albums, I hope these prompts help jumpstart your journaling!

  • Independence Day…this was the first year that I remember fireworks being banned. We have had unprecedented heat and fires which prompted the need for this ban. Personally I was relieved not to have to worry about our cat running away as usually our neighborhood blows up with the sound of sonic booms and explosions of illegal fireworks. This year all fireworks were deemed illegal – even the sparklers! What are your favorite fireworks? Do you have pets? And if so, how do they react during Independence Day? Do you have any neighborhood celebrations or traditions when celebrating the Fourth of July?
  • Patriotic Titles…here are some title ideas to jump start your journaling:
    • Stars and Stripes Forever
    • Patriot
    • Freedom
    • Celebrate
    • Proud to be an American
    • Red, White and Blue
    • What a Blast!
    • Home of the Brave
    • America the Beautiful
  • Staycation…Do you typically take a summer vacation? Many people chose not to travel this year due to the pandemic. We typically don’t travel too far away in the summer because the weather is so nice in July. We’ve waited all year for it to stop raining so why would we fly away? Haha! If you stayed close to home maybe you could journal about your “staycation” or maybe you took the time in the summer to do some home improvement projects….write about that.
  • In the Backyard…Take photos of your backyard and journal about your favorite outdoor activities you enjoy in the summertime.
  • In the Garden…you may start to see your garden growing in July and enjoy some of the fruits of your labor like delicious blueberries. We have been trying to grow pinot grapes for several years now and this is the first summer where we have seen our vines grow large clusters of grapes! It was exciting and of course I was out there with my camera taking photos so I could document our grape growing/wine making journey.
  • Summer Reading List…Are you one of those book lovers who can’t wait to curate your summer reading list? Your scrapbook or journal (or Happy Planner) is a great place to record the titles of the books you’re currently reading. Or make a list of how many books you wanted to read this summer and which ones you actually finished and recommend. What genre of books do you gravitate towards? Another idea is to write a list of your Top 3-5 favorite books of the year or your Top 10 favorite books of all time.
  • Offline…a day at the lake will do it! Did you spend any time offline this summer? How was that for you? Was it intentional or did you lose or break your phone? Or on the opposite spectrum did you binge watch any shows or podcasts? Creative Memories Staycation Sticker Pack has a lot of journal prompts for home projects, staying home and hobbies. My niece and my step-sister started their own DIY furniture flip business this summer! Here is their Youtube channel if you want to check it out. I’m so proud of them for doing this fun project and especially love that it’s a mother/daughter duo! You can check them out here:

I hope these journal prompts and ideas are helpful to you as you write in your scrapbooks, planners and journals. (For June journal prompts, check out June Journal Prompts). If you would like weekly encouragement with your writing, join my Wednesday Writers Club on Instagram or Facebook!
