You stick your photos into your scrapbook and now you may be stuck on what to write. It’s easy to add the names and dates but do you ever want to go beyond that to make your scrapbooking more meaningful?

The first place to get ideas for your journaling is from your actual photos. Imagine sitting down with a friend who you haven’t seen in awhile and you are showing her your favorite photos from February. What are you telling her about those photos? Are any stories emerging that you would like to document in your scrapbook album?

In this post I’ll share some of my journaling prompts with you for February photos. You may be current or you may be working with photos from the 1960’s … it’s ok, just jump in where you’re at. I’ll be posting journal prompts every month this year so eventually we will have the whole year covered with journaling ideas.

Besides photos, another place to get journaling ideas is from the current Sticker Packs and Variety Mat Packs you are using. Some of my February Journal Prompts are from my photos and some are from Creative Memories Winter Woods Sticker Pack and Mat Pack as well as CM’s Sweetheart Theme Pack.

February Journal Prompts

Here are some journaling prompts to help you tell your stories from the photos you took in February (any year). Of course we all have different events and life circumstances but if you are stuck and not sure what to write about in your journal or in your scrapbook albums, I hope these prompts help jumpstart your journaling!

  • Winter…we are still in the thick of winter with Spring right around the corner. I used the Winter Woods Sticker Pack on my February pages. Did it feel like winter where you were in February?
  • Snow, Snow, Snow! We had a snow storm in February; actually it was mostly freezing rain which made for some stunning photos of icicles adorning our house. Did you get outside much in February? Why or why not? (For a simple icicle border idea check out How to Embellish and Journal Your Scrapbook Pages )
  • Home Sweet Home…with cold weather comes an excuse for comfort food! My daughter received a sourdough start and learned how to make bread in February. Did you know that was a trend in 2020? Sourdough starters were trending and baking became very popular. It is a lot of work (especially since my daughter had broken her hand in January) and time consuming but delicious.
  • Happy Valentine’s Day! How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Do you have sweetheart? Do you celebrate “Galentine’s Day?” A day where you celebrate your friendships? If you have children, how was Valentine’s Day different this year than last year? Being a Preschool teacher last year we had a big Valentine’s Day party and it was one of the highlight’s of my February. This year Preschool is closed and things look a lot different! I had a very quiet day at home with the highlight being my husband made my favorite breakfast.
  • Our Winter Necessities…What became necessary this winter for you? My mom was having 24-7 hospice care but on the weekend of the ice storm we had trouble getting help. My husband spent half an hour scraping thick ice off of one of the caregiver’s cars so she could go home. I ended up covering one of the 12-hour shifts as we live very close and the roads were too treacherous for her regular caregiver. My mom in her dementia thought I had gotten a job with hospice and she was amazed at the odds of being my first patient!
  • This is Us…If you’re like me, I haven’t wanted my picture taken much during quarantine. The gray grow out and the added pounds have made me a bit camera shy. But I do like the photo above as this is truly “us.” And I’m grateful for an “us.” Be sure to get out from behind the camera once in awhile and get in the photos you’re scrapbooking or journaling.
  • You Make My Heart Happy…or This Makes My Heart Happy…make a list of what makes your heart happy. You can include photos or just fill the page with happy thoughts.
  • Follow Your Heart….one of my daughter’s followed her heart and moved out in February. I am so happy for her but also that is one more bird who has flown the nest. Of course I have a million memories and a million worries and a lot of mixed emotions about this new chapter. I included some photos of her move with a few details. I’ll save the journaling for my Happy Planner journal (where I can pour my heart out).
  • Grief….this winter we had some pretty significant losses. My niece’s boyfriend passed away after contracting COVID and my mom passed away after a 7-month hospice journey. Our hearts are broken. On February 28 my mom took her last breath. I put some photos on a few pages but I have yet to journal those pages. Grief sucks. There is no other way to say it. It’s something no-one wants to go through yet we all have to eventually. I think it was fitting that my mom passed away on the last day of February just when her first daffodils were starting to bloom. I kept hearing the song “He turns Graves into Gardens” on the radio and God gave me a real life example of that with the ice storm at the beginning of February and the daffodils blooming at the end of February.

I hope some of these ideas are helpful for you as you write in your scrapbooks, planners and journals. For January journaling prompts, check out January Journal Prompts). If you would like weekly encouragement with your writing, join my Wednesday Writers Club on Instagram or Facebook!
